Mucho Better

I did my five miles this morning and it was much better than yesterday evening. I started with a banana and a glass of OJ then hit the trail. The weather was cool and before I knew it, the run was over. That's how I like them :) I got back home and had a nice bowl of Kashi GoLean cereal with some blueberries. I've found that as I increase my miles, it helps to take in some carbs and protein within a half-hour or so of the run. I only do this on the longer runs.

On my long run on Saturday, I've started drinking a Powerbar recovery drink. It tastes really good (very much like chocolate milk) and it seems to really help my recovery. It really is amazing how taking in some carbs and protein after your long run can help. My legs are less sore and I feel like I could go out and run later that day if I needed to. On today's run, I also made sure to hydrate pretty frequently. I took in about 8-10 ounces every two miles and that helped a lot as well. Now the only thing I need to figure out is how to drink without spilling it all over myself :) Running and drinking weren't made to go together.

My next run is Thursday (3 miles) and then Steph and I are headed to Richmond to visit family. This means that my long run will be done where her dad lives in Hopewell. I've asked him to map out 8 miles. Hopefully, there will be no major hills (unless he feels the need to pay me back for some horrible thing I've done).

Tomorrow is SCUBA...woohoo!!!

Cheers!

Hot...hot and wet...

So, once again, the weather has turned unbearable. Today's run was in 87 degree heat and extremely high humidity. Thankfully, all I did today was three miles. Whew!!!

Because of the weather, I'm going to do tomorrow's five miles in the morning. I've already filled up my Fuelbelt bottles and put them in the fridge :)

Besides being warm, today's run went great and, of course, I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

I've gotten some questions as to what I'm going to do once I get my SCUBA certification. So I thought I'd give a few links of the places I want to dive. Find them here, and here.

Also, if you haven't checked it out yet, Discovery Channel is hosting Shark Week this week. Check it out....I would love to see a shark :)

7 miles and counting...

So, I did my long run yesterday. It was 7 miles and man was it hot and humid. Steph and I usually go to the trail early in the mornings on Saturday, but yesterday we slept in a little and we paid for it. I was dragging by the end. Nonetheless, I completed my 7 miles in 1:09:45. I'm pretty happy with that considering the heat. And, I also figured out the importance of hydration on really hot days. I didn't really drink that much during my run (maybe 12 ounces) and I think that had a lot to do with my tiredness. I was under the assumption that this run would be like my others in terms of weather and man I was wrong. So next time, more hydration :)

I also took everyone's advice on the stretching. I ended up doing a light walk followed by minimal stretching before I ran. Then I stretched like I normally do after my run. It worked very well and I don't feel any soreness today. So, I think I'm going to stick with that and see how it works. Thanks everyone for the advice.

We saw Harry Potter yesterday after the run. It was pretty good. I've never read the books but Steph has and she seemed to like it too. Although, she says they leave way too much out.

Next week, my schedule is 3-5-3-8. I can't wait :)

Pre-Run Stretching....and a little Scuba

Before I get to my questions about stretching, I have to fill you in on my Scuba adventure.....Wow!!! I never knew how much I would LOVE it!!!! Last night we did our first confined water dive and I think I'm hooked. It was so cool. We had our first two quizzes (which I aced...100% on both) and then headed to the water.

During the dive we were shown three skills: how to recover and return a regulator that has fallen out of your mouth (this is actually two skills and there are two ways to purge your regulator) and then we learned how to clear our masks underwater when it becomes filled with water. Once we demonstrated mastery of those skills, we were cut loose for about 1 1/2 hours to swim underwater to our hearts content. Man was it awesome. It is so peaceful. And, there is just something cool about breathing underwater.

Anyway, beginning September 8 (and assuming I pass the course I'm currently in), I am going to take the Advanced Open Water diving course which is the next class in the series. Over a long weekend, I get to learn Altitude Diving, Deep Diving, Night Diving, Search and Recovery Diving, and Underwater Navigation. After I complete that course, I will then take the Rescue Diver course. After that, and after a few more dives, I'll be qualified as a Master Scuba Diver or a Divemaster (depending on the route I wish to take). Wooohooo!!! (and...uhmm...ahem...if I get to be a Master Scuba Diver or a Divemaster, I will expect everyone in all social situations to call me Master Scuba Diver Jason or Divemaster Jason).

Ok, so on to the stretching questions. Everyone you talk to seems to give you different advice on pre-run stretching. Just as I mentioned in my post on nutrition recently, this has left me confused. Usually, I stretch for about 5-10 minutes before I run. I don't walk before nor do I warm up in any other way. I simply do some calf, soleus, quad, and hamstring stretches. Then I head out. After my run, I then stretch again doing the same stretches. What is confusing is that some folks say you shouldn't do any pre-run stretching, but just walk for about 5 minutes then start your run. Soooo......what are your thoughts? Is this something that is unique to each person? Or should I stop the stretching I'm doing and just do a walk warmup? Thanks for any help.

My run went fine. It was way hot and humid, about 85 degrees. Blech!! Anyway, I have my 7 miler Saturday. I'm, again, pretty excited about my long run as it will be the longest I've ever run in my life :)

Running Music Redux

I figure there are two types of people in the world: those that run with music and those that don't. I fall into the former category. As such, I tend to constantly be on the lookout for good music. I posted a while back for some suggestions regarding good music to run to. I received some good advice and some...uhmm....not so good. After a few months of being a picky running music snob, I have come up with a list for future generations to peruse and enjoy. So, in an effort to help those who are looking for some decent tunes, see my list below (in no particular order):

  1. Metallica (Black album, Master of Puppets, Garage Days..actually most anything)
  2. Ocean's 11 and 13 soundtrack (would go for 12 but I haven't bought it yet)
  3. My Chemical Romance (anything)
  4. Old school hip-hop (like 80s and early 90s-tone loc, run DMC, Beastie Boys, etc.)
  5. Some new rap (Eminem, Dr. Dre)
  6. Various pop crap (One-hit wonder stuff that has a good beat)
  7. Steve Vai Passion and Warfare
  8. Evanescence
  9. Beach Boys (I know that sounds weird but they rock while you're running)
  10. Van Halen (Roth and Hagar, but I definitely like the Hagar stuff more for running)
  11. Some country music (I'm not a real big fan, but I like Big and Rich)

So, that should get you started. So, tell me, what do you like to listen to while you run?

My run went a little rough today. I had a greek salad wrap for lunch and like 5 french fries and it didn't set too well for my run. I felt like I was dragging. But, surprisingly enough, I set a better pace today for my 4 miler than I did last week....go figure. The whole time I was running I was thinking I was way behind my normal pace. I was actually ahead.

Tomorrow is a rest day (except for my Scuba). I can't wait until scuba class. We get to breathe through the scuba gear....woohoo!!!!!

Cheers!!

Enough with the smoking!!!!

So on my run today I almost got into some fisticuffs with an idiot smoker on the rail-trail. Now, I'm a believer in everyone's right to do whatever they hell they want to. Except when it comes to my running and your cigarette smoke. I know its outdoors and you can do whatever you want. But, the problem is when I'm hoofing it, I have no interest at all in inhaling your exhaled smoke. Argh!!!!!!!!

Yesterday, I yelled at a guy who was smoking on the trail. I was on the last mile of my 6 mile run and I had picked it up a good bit so I was breathing pretty heavily. I ran by this couple and the guy hides his cigarette so I wouldn't see it (they were walking towards me). But, as soon I passed him I could smell it...and since the trail we run on goes through a tunnel, I smelled the freaking stuff for at least another 1/4 mile. Today, was a similar situation. I yelled out both times that they should be more considerate of folks who are running.

You know, I really don't have a problem with anyone smoking, just why do it on the running trail? You're not getting any health benefits by walking and smoking at the same time. I'm certainly not getting any benefit from inhaling your crap. So, next time, drop the cigarettes for change and enjoy the fresh air.

In terms of my run, I did 3 miles and walked one. The reason I walked an extra mile is I'm trying again to calibrate my Nike+Ipod thingy. We'll see tomorrow how well it worked.

PS. If I ever, EVER complain about how tired my legs are or how sore I am, please remind me that I'm a jerk.....this guy is awesome (and incredibly inspiring)!!!!

6-miler and first time out with Fuel Belt

So today was my long run.  I went six miles and took my Fuel Belt along.  The model I have comes with four 8 oz. bottles, although I only took two for this run.  The actual belt and bottles work wonderfully.  The belt sits great around my waist.  The only real problem was it kept moving laterally around my waist.  I think this was because I only had two bottles instead of the four and therefore it was not weighted correctly.  Otherwise, I loved it.

The run itself went very well.  Today was so beautiful.  Steph and I got to the trail about 9:30am and it was about 60 degrees out, which was perfect.  Steph ended up running 2 miles and walking 3 and I did my six.  Woo hoo for her!!!!

Next week, my schedule is 3-4-3-7 on M-T-Th-S.  I am definitely moving my strength training so I don't do it on my long run days.  So from now on, I'll be lifting on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

PS. I shaved my goatee off :)

Cheers!

Running and SCUBA

So Wednesday was my first SCUBA lesson.  I am taking the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Open Water Diving Course.  This course enables me to dive recreationally anywhere in the world.  For some reason, I have this fascination with diving on wrecks and this is my first step to doing that.

Anyway, our first class was a general classroom session followed by our swim test which consisted of swimming 300 yards in a mask, snorkel, and fins and then to tread water for 10 minutes without touching the sides of the pool (and not drowning according to the instructor).  Neither was difficult, so I passed with flying colors.  Next week, we do our first confined dive in the pool and I can't wait.  Until then, I have a lot of interesting reading to do for the class.

My run yesterday went great.  I did 3 miles and then lifted.  It rained most of the time I was running, which I like, so I was very pleased with day.  Tomorrow is my long day and I run 6 miles.  After my run, Steph and I are headed to Ft. Necessity National Battlefield to see where George Washington got his ass handed to him and then we head back and pick up the new Harry Potter book for Steph.  We should have a pretty full day.

I guess I should also mention that I will be shaving my goatee off.  First, because a lot of folks voted in the poll that I should.  Second, I have to in order to keep the mask I'll be using in SCUBA from filling up with water.  So here's to a new look!!!

Cheers!!

I'm a Tiger (according to Blogger)

So I added my birth year to my blogger profile today and lo and behold it told me my zodiacal year is the Year of the Tiger....hmmm....since I didn't know what that meant, I looked it up on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia claims:

"Tiger people are difficult to resist, for they are magnetic characters and their natural air of authority confers a certain prestige on them. They are tempestuous yet calm, warm-hearted yet fearsome, courageous in the face of danger yet yielding, soft and mysterious in unexpected places. They enjoy a life full of challenges and unexpected events, like visiting unusual places and meeting interesting or outstanding people. Other people in their area are easily attracted by the tiger's enthusiasm and way of life.

Tigers find pleasure in the unpredictable, and while other people would rather make a backward step, they are not afraid to explore the new and unusual. But it is not that simple to interest the Tiger. What they really need is first-hand experience. Usually open and frank, these people are likely to withdraw and can be aggressive when trapped. As soon as the Tiger has regained their sense of security their confidence also returns, enabling them to set out once more. These people usually tend to trust their instincts, though there is another side of their personality, which assesses situations thoughtfully before they launch any actions. Their friends usually secretly admire their determination and optimism, though sometimes may find it complicated to share the Tiger's enthusiasm and can be pushed away and left behind. Although Tigers can be courageous and generous friends, if they are not able to achieve what they want, they can be inflexible and self-centered. So if your friend was born in the year of the Tiger, there will be highs and lows in your friendship, but the friendship itself will remain firm.

Ideal jobs for tigers include entrepreneur, military officer, politician, musician, writer, poet, artist, theater director, biological and environmental engineer, stockbroker, athlete, film star, trade union leader, company director, stunt person, explorer, and lawyer."

Wow!!!! I really feel good about myself now. I think I want to be an explorer. I've tried some of the other jobs and they suck :) So, as of now, I'm soliciting funds for an exploration. But, until I get enough dough I guess I'll have to continue to be a runner...maybe I'll be a running explorer...that's kind of cool (ok not really, but I had to have a segue to the rest of my post about my run today).

So, the 4 miler went very well. Can't wait until 6 miles this Saturday. Weather was still incredibly humid. It's like out of nowhere. Because of the high temps and humidity lately I've been thinking about logistics related to my water consumption. As you know, I have a fuel belt. But, in total, it only holds 32 ounces. The problem is that the trail I'd like to run for my longer runs has no ready access to water. There are no public water fountains, gas stations, etc. It, literally, is out in the middle of nowhere. So, the question is how do I get water for myself after I deplete the fuel belt? There is the possibility of changing the trail I run, but man I really don't want to do that. I could always carry a camelback or something....any ideas?

Cheers!!

Craptacular day!!

Man, when did summer arrive? Ugh, what a horribly humid day today. The temperature wasn't that bad.....around 83 or so, but man the humidity was terrible. I don't know how high humidity can go without raining, but it must have been maxed out today. Although, running at two in the afternoon probably didn't help things.

I pushed it a little today to see how fast I could run a 5k...I ran it in 28:06. My scheduled run was for 3 miles. I'm very happy with that time. In fact, I'm really happy with it, considering that I've lost 60 pounds since January and could barely walk/jog 3 miles then.

Tomorrow is 4 miles and strength training. Then, on Wednesday comes what I've been waiting for most of the last month or so....SCUBA school...woohoo!!!!! I start SCUBA class that night. It goes for 5 weeks and then I'm certified. I can't wait. I really want to dive in some wrecks and this is the first in quite a few classes I have to take in order to do that. I can't wait!!! I'll let you know how that goes as well.

5 miler

Today Steph and I got up bright and early and visited the rail-trail for our exercise. I ran the long run of the week (5 miles) and Steph walked 3 miles and ran 1...woohoo for her!!!

The weather was great and my run went very well. I picked it up a little towards the end as well. My pace was 9:22 so I was very happy with that. That pace is actually faster than my 4 mile run I did on Tuesday. The five miles I did today also included a hill. So, all in all, it went great. I'm very happy. Also, I should mention that 5 miles is the longest I've ever run...ever!!!! Woohoo for me!!!!

I lifted today as well. I think I may be moving my lifting schedule as my long runs become longer. It is just too much to do in one day I think. Anyway, we had great weather and a great workout.

Next week I follow the same mileage as I did this week with the exception that my long run is 6 miles.

Cheers!!

Weathery Goodness

What a beautiful day we had in Fairmont today. It was about 75 degrees and no humidity (thank goodness). We need to move to an area where summers are like this all year. I need seasons though, so it has to be someplace with a winter and fall as well. Hmmm....any ideas?

Today was a 3 mile day. Went very well. My pace was 9:30. So I felt good about that. I'm really looking forward to my Saturday run. It will 5 be miles. I may try out my fuel belt if the weather is warm enough. I've had a lot of folks ask for my review after I use it, so look for a future post on my experience.

Next week, the schedule for running is M-T-Th-S with the distances being 3-4-3-6 respectively. So it'll be the same as this week except my long run is 6 miles.

I guess I should also let you know that I'm still strength training, but I'm focusing entirely on my upper body. I figure I'm getting enough work on my legs that I don't need to add anything to the running. I think I'm going to change my lifting to a T-Th-S schedule so I can do it on the same days that I run. Although, when the long runs really start to kick in I may change it back to MWF. We'll see.

Runs with Water (or how not to dehydrate)

Another one of my cool running gadgets arrived today. I finally got my Fuel Belt. Steph says I look like a dork, but I'm more concerned with, I don't know, not dying of dehydration!!!

So I got the helium 4 model. It has four neat little 8 oz. bottles and a little pocket that you can put a gel and some keys in. I did a lot of research and determined that this was the model for me. Woo Hoo!!! I can't wait to use it.

4 miles today

So today, after consultation with my PT, I decided to run 4 miles. Normally I do just three miles, four days a week. I did three miles yesterday, four today and I'll do three miles on Thursday. Then, hopefully, I'll do five miles on Saturday (in case you don't know, this is the first week of my training for the marathon). I decided I would begin the training and then see where it takes me. If I can go injury-free, then I'll run the marathon. If I get injured then I'll just do the 8k on that day.

The run went well. Man it was blazing hot though. 93 degrees and humid. Yuck!!!

But, I didn't run on my normal rail-trail today because I saw a house next to the trail last time that I swear came out of some horrible scary movie. Since I didn't want to be kidnapped and eaten alive, I decided to alter my course. I ran the other part of the trail that is paved. Much nicer :)

In terms of my Ipod-Nike thingy......I'm in the middle on it. I like a lot of things about it, but I hate the fact that I can't get it calibrated. For example, today I ran four miles and it told me I ran 4.07 miles or something like that. I know shouldn't be so picky, but I like accuracy. However, on the good side of things it keeps track of my workouts and actually talks to you as you run. In addition, when you set a personal best time or distance, someone famous talks to you through your headphones and congratulates you...today is was someone named Paula Adkins, or Paula Gladwell, Paula Abdul, I can't remember...it was apparently a famous person. My understanding is that Lance Armstrong is on there too, but I haven't had him pat me on the shoulder yet ;)

Lastly, I had some orthotics made for me. The PT was only able to create one though as we ran out of time. So on Thursday I'll get the other one. We'll see how much I like them. I have to get adjusted to them so I can't wear them to run in just yet. I have to walk in them for a while and then begin to run. Hopefully, that will also help all the problems I've had with my left leg and maybe even prevent some with my right.

Stay tuned!!!!

New trail to run

Yesterday Steph and I ran the northern part of the Marion County Rail Trail. If you remember when we biked the 40-miler, we took this trail to Morgantown and back. It is crushed gravel and is quite enjoyable to run on. I ran my 3 miles and Steph walked 2 1/4 and ran 3/4 of a mile....woohoo for her!!!!! I'm so happy that she ran. I hope she gives it another shot soon :)

The reason I decided to run the rail trail was because I think I am developing some issues with Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). One of the causes of this injury is running on a track for an extended period of time. I have been running our our local track for about a month now, so I thought this may have been causing my problem. Also, I didn't know that you should be altering the direction you run on the track if you have to run on that surface. Apparently, turning left all the time (as you do when you run on a track) can cause some major problems with your left leg. I was getting some pain on the outside of my left knee and thought ITBS was the problem. It seems to have lessened and I've added some stretching specific to the Iliotibial band to my routine. My soleus issue is resolving itself I think. I feel hardly any pain and I'm still icing it.

All of this stuff kind of leads to me the conclusion that it is amazing how much you don't know when you begin running. It seems that it is so simple: you put on some shoes and go running. But, man, it is not like that at all. Your body is an amazing thing. And, I've found that it can adjust to almost any thing you ask of it. But, you have to give it time. You just can't throw on some shoes and hit the pavement. Especially, if you plan on making running a part of your life. A lot of folks who read this blog have given me that advice. But, as most of the folks who read this blog also know, when I get focussed on something, I tend to ignore everything but what I've experienced. I think over the last few months, those are the lessons I've learned........listen and give it time.

They should pay me...

Went to PT again this morning...got the massage (woohoo!!) and they also shot some sound waves at my injury. Apparently, using an ultrasound to shoot sound waves at injured tissue helps it heal. Didn't really feel like anything while she was doing it, but she said it wouldn't. She said it would help though.

I've been pleased so far with the progress on my healing. I ran on both Monday and Tuesday of this week and will be running later today. Although I felt pain, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as before. In fact, on Tuesday it felt like I didn't even have an injury. I've also been icing everyday, whether I feel pain or not. This morning I didn't feel any pain until she started poking around the muscle.

On Tuesday, I tested out my new Ipod-Nike setup. I don't have Nike shoes, but I use a little thing called a LaceLid to attach the sensor to my shoes. It seems to work ok, but I still can't get the stupid thing calibrated. And that is what lead to me running close to 4.5 miles on Tuesday. I had orginally planned to run 5k. So I put that into the Ipod. Unfortunately, I was thinking in miles instead of kilometers and actually put in 3k into the Ipod. I didn't realize that until I had already run about a 1/2 mile. By that time, I had already lost count of how many laps I had run. So I not only had no clue how much I had already run, I also had the uncalibrated Ipod telling me I was almost done. How confusing!!!!

So I decided I would just run 30 minutes. Well, I got so caught up in doing the calculations in my head to figure out what lap I was on, I completely lost track of time and ended up running about 40 minutes. Good news is that my leg seemed to take the extra running fine and actually felt better afterwards. The bad news is that I have to try and re-calibrate that stupid Ipod.

So anyway, got good runs in on Monday and Tuesday. I also lifted yesterday. Today, I'm going to look into some 5k's that are scheduled in the coming weeks in the hope of finding a few that I can get under my belt.

Cheers!!

Squishy Middle

Well, I've got good news and bad news....the good news is that it is not my tibia that causing me my problems. It is my Soleus muscle. That's the muscle that lies under your calf. The physical therapy folks did a lot of poking around to find out it was that muscle...and man was it painful once they found it to be that muscle. So after they isolated the pain, they then massaged that muscle by actually lifting my calf and poking the Soleus with thumbs and fingers....sounds weird I know, but it felt kinda good.

In terms of the marathon, it doesn't look too good. I was advised today that I overpronate (which I already knew) and to make it worse, my left leg actually pronates more than my right. In addition, they think there is another bio-mechanical problem with that leg that is causing the pain in that muscle. Unfortunately, they don' t know what the problem is yet. On Thursday, I'm back in for them to watch me run so they see if there is some technique issue. In the meantime, I was advised to keep my current training the same as its been for the past 4 weeks (3 miles 4 days a week with strength training on MWF) and to do no more. I was also told to continue the icing and to take ibuprofen on a more frequent basis to handle the inflammation.

All in all, I was glad it wasn't the bone. And, I'm glad the folks who are my therapists are runners and triathletes. So they have been through these kinds of things before. But I am very disappointed that the marathon seems to be slipping away. So, I'm kind of in the middle on how I feel about the visit.

Today's run went fine and I iced when I got back home. I also lifted today (arms and chest) and that went off without a hitch.

Beautiful Weekend

We had an absolutely beautiful weekend here in North Central West Virginia. Yesterday was mid 70s no humidity and today was practically the same. So, as you can imagine, Steph and I took full advantage. Yesterday morning, Steph and I went to the track for our workout. She went for her 3 mile walk and I jogged for 3 miles. We both felt good afterwards, so after we had showered and did some chores around the house, we decided to go out for an early dinner.

Today, we got up and went for a bike ride. This time, however, we did the South Fairmont leg of the Rail trail. I think total we got about a 11-12 mile ride in. Anyway, what a great weekend.

Tomorrow, I visit the physical therapist and will find out if I should continue to pursue the marathon. I find that I have pretty serious pain in my leg after I run two days in a row. I feel fine if I run a day and then rest a day. It's just the two day in a row thing. We'll see.
