Stupid does hurt

A few months ago I posted on how stupid should hurt. Well, I have found out first hand that it does. I have what's known in the medical world as Achilles tendinitis. That's right. After my long run last Saturday I had some heel pain. I ended up running 5 on that Monday, and then the day after Christmas, decided I would put in my 8. BIG MISTAKE!!! I was fine until I got 5 miles or so. My heel then began to scream.

Of course, being the stubborn person I am, I thought that I could push through (which I did BTW). The problem was I could barely walk after I was done. So for the last few days I have not been running (I've barely been walking) as the heel pain is incredibly bad. Thankfully, things appear to be on the mend. I'm not sure what caused this problem, but it could have been the ramp up of my mileage. Also, I think my shoes are in need of replacement (I'll be taking care of that tomorrow)

But, it looks like I won't be taking part in the half-mary this coming Saturday. Steph will be doing it alone. She did 13 yesterday (woohoo for her!!) and I'll be cheering her on next Saturday.

As the new year approaches, I've been contemplating my New Year's resolutions. Last year, I resolved to lose weight and begin running. In reflection, not only did I lose weight (70lbs), but I also ran a marathon. This year, I think I'd like to bench press my body weight 3-5 times. That'll be my resolution. I'll also be keeping the weight off, but I'd like to increase my strength.

SOOOOOO, beginning tomorrow (I'm going to start a day early), I'll begin my lifting program. Once my heel heals (ha), I'll be back to 5-8-5-12.

Oh, one more thing. Since I kept to my resolution last year, I will be rewarding myself in the coming days. I'm buying a 2008 Red Jeep Wrangler X 4x4. Woohoo for me :)

Happy New Year!!!!

56 miles this week for the family

Steph and I ran 12 miles today, and man did it feel great!!!! This was the first time that Steph has ever run 12 miles, so WooooHoooo for her!!! Total this week for her she ran 26 miles and I ran 30.

I'm soooooo glad to be back to that mileage. My left foot is a little sore (I'm not sure why). Also, Steph's knee is causing her some problems, but otherwise we'll feel wonderful. The weather today was wonderful as well. We're experiencing a bit of a heat wave. The temp was around 50 degrees.

Next week will be 5-8-5-12.

Due to the holidays, I may not post much next week. But, nevertheless, Steph and I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. If you don't celebrate Christmas, then have a safe and happy holiday!!!

Cheers!

So I either set a PR or my timer messed up

Steph and I made it back from vacation. It was a lot of fun. We ran on Saturday and this past Monday.

Today, I ran 5 miles. I put in 8 yesterday and 5 on Monday (in Colonial Williamsburg), but here's the thing. I ran 5 miles today in 42:54. That's the fastest I've ever run 5 miles. Last week, I ran 5 miles in like 45 minutes. Both times, I ran through a tunnel on our trail that's like 1/4 miles long. Usually, my Garmin 205 loses the satellite signal when I go through the tunnel, but I think the timer keeps going. It has this thing called "auto-pause" that senses when you are stopped and pauses the timer.

My question, for all the other Garmin users, is does the auto-pause kick in when the signal is lost? If it does, then I don't have a PR, but if it doesn't then Woohoo for me!!!! Anyone know?

This Saturday is 12 miles for Steph and I. We are preparing for our half-mary on January 5th and this will be the first of our 12 mile runs in preparation.

BTW, I'm catching a cold. It's not too bad in terms of running yet, so I'll be muddling through I think.

Cheers!!

8 yesterday and 5 today

Over the past two days, I've run 13 miles. Steph has done about the same. I won't be blogging for a little while as Steph and I are taking a much needed vacation to Colonial Williamsburg. We'll still be running though. We are going to do 6 on Saturday and then 5 on Monday. It'll be really cool to run in Colonial Williamsburg. And, we are going to get runner's massages at the spa there. I've never gotten a massage before, so this should be a interesting experience for me. In the words of George Costanza, I hope it doesn't move ;)

Anyway, we'll back next week.

My legs felt really good this week. I did 5-8-5 (and then the 6 on Sat.). Next week it'll be 5-8-5-12. Finally, I'll be back on the schedule I want. On the 5th, Steph and I are running a half (this will be her first compettive race) and we're both excited.

See you next week. Cheers!!

Back in the swing again

I did 5 miles this morning, which felt really good. In fact, it was the best 5 miles I've ever run. My time was like 6 minutes faster than the 5 miles I ran last week. So, I think my legs are finally recovered. I have some residual soreness every now and again, but overall I feel as good as I did going into the marathon.

Steph and I have run into a bit of a problem though. Now that we are both into the double-digits in terms of distance, we both have to carry water with us. But, we only have one Fuelbelt. I have a Nathan sports bottle that I can carry, but we really need to get another Fuelbelt. So, I'll be ordering another one this week. I hope she doesn't want a Garmin 205.....we'll be broke :)

Cheers!!!

46 miles this week for the family

Steph and I did ten miles each today...woohoo for her...that's the most she's ever run. The trail stunk though. Most of the running was done either in the snow or in the slushy, melty crap that used to be snow. I knew today's environmental conditions would suck, but we endured. Today's run felt great for me. Steph has a little soreness, but she did great. So, for the week, Steph and I ran 46 total miles, 23 for her and 23 for me.

The plan is to take a break next Saturday as we'll be in Colonial Williamsburg, so we'll only run six I think. We'll then conquer 12 the following Saturday. Then two weeks after that we run the Run To Read Half.

I think my schedule for next week will be 5-7-5-6 Then 5-8-5-12 the following week. At that point, I'll be on the schedule I want to maintain until I begin to train for the Marine Corps Marathon.

One final bit of news, I just got confirmation that I'll be learning to sail this summer. It is a week-long, live-aboard program in Charleston, SC. I'm really psyched. The plan is to go to the Outer Banks for a week (so I can SCUBA) with Steph. Steph will come back home as she will only be able to take one week vacation. I'll then head to Charleston and spend the next week sailing the high seas (and pillaging of course)!!! WooHoo!!!

Marathon Parkour

So Steph and I ran 4 miles last night at the local track. It was covered in snow and we ran in the dark, but it was fun. Tomorrow we're shooting for 10 miles each. I may or may not do 10. The last two days of running in the snow made me use muscles that I think I've never used so I'm a tad sore. We'll see. If I don't do 10 I'll still do 8 I think.

We'll be running on the rail-trail. Hopefully, the rain tonight will clear away the snow. There is a chance that we'll be running in the cold rain. Yuck!!! Either way, it doesn't look like the weather is going to cooperate.

Oh, I forgot to mention. Steph and I are headed to Colonial Williamsburg next Friday for our gift to each other for Christmas. We'll be back in time for Christmas day, but we'll be celebrating "our" Christmas next week. After that, we're headed to the Greenbrier for a fun filled Martin Luther King Day weekend. I'm going to learn Falconry. How cool is that? I'm going to see if I can become a certified Falconeer while I'm there. Count me in with Ghengis Khan and Conan the Barbarian.

I've also been thinking about New Year's resolutions lately. Last year, I decided to begin running and I ended up running a marathon. This year, I think my resolution will be to bench-press my own body weight 3-5 times. We'll see how that goes.

Actually, I think my goal for next year will be to run like the guys in this video. If there was a Parkour Marathon, I'd sign up:

Cheers!!

5 miles in 5 inches

Of snow. Yep, I just got back from a 5 mile run in 5 inches of snow. I'm insane. No, really, I am. Who goes running in snow? I'm an idiot. Anyway, as stupid as I am, I REALLY enjoyed it :)

So the question is, what happens if we get more snow? Do I run in 8 inches? a foot? Yikes!!!

17 miles today for the family

So Steph ran 9 miles today. Again, that's the longest she's ever run. WooHoo!!!!! I got in a measly 8. Compared to her, I was a wus. Although tired, we both feel pretty good. Total for the week for me: 19 miles. Total for Steph: 23.5 miles. Steph has decided to run the Shamrock Half with me in March. A couple of friends are going to run it as well with us. I can't wait.

Oh, I almost forgot, Steph's dad and his wife as well as a bunch of Steph's extended family will either walk or run the Richmond Half Mary next year. How cool is that?

In contrast to this year when I ran the Richmond Marathon, I will be the cheerleader for everyone next year. I will have run the Marine Corps Marathon just a few weeks before the Richmond, so I'll be sitting out. But, man, how cool is it that all those folks are going to run or walk it next year? I have such a cool family.

After we got our run in today, we decided to decorate the outside of the house for Christmas. I think that was more tiring than the run :) The weather was beautiful, if a bit cold.

Tonight, WVU plays Pitt. if we win, we are headed to the big show. National Championship baby!!!

Go Mountaineers!!!!

3 More Miles

So I ran three miles this morning. Felt pretty good, but my legs seems to still be recovering from the Marathon. I've also been running around our lovely city as opposed to running on the trail. I really like running in the city, but I find that I have to run most of the time on the sidewalk as the roads around here are pretty dangerous. I also really like just walking out my front door instead of driving to the trail.

It looks like on Saturday, I'll do 6 or 7 and Steph will 8 or 9.

Cheers!!

Whew!!!

So, I'm glad the Thanksgiving day holiday is over.  Is it just me or did Christmas start up right after Halloween?  It didn't even feel like Thanksgiving got the credit it deserves.  Anyway, Steph I did a "Turkey" trot while visiting family in VA.  It was kind of cool as we ran around the campus of UVA, which, if you haven't been, is just a beautiful university.  Anyway, we got back on Sunday and promptly crashed.  We didn't get to sleep in once over the holiday.

On Monday, I ran about 3.5  miles and today I ran 5.  My legs are getting back to normal I think.  I'll do 3 tomorrow and then I'm toying with 8 on Saturday.  We'll see.

It's always good to have a holiday, but it's always good to be back home :)

I'll take 3 miles and a Garmin 205 please

So, I put in 3 more miles today.  My right calf is still a little sore, but I think it'll be fine.  I'll think I'm going to stick with 3 for tomorrow or Wednesday and then 3 on Thursday and, finally, 4 or 5 on Saturday.  Steph and I are traveling for Thanksgiving so we'll be running a different route on Thursday and Saturday which I'm pretty happy about.  I get so bored sometimes on my normal route.

I also ran without my ipod again.  I'm still not used to it yet, but at least I'm making an effort.

Lastly, my Garmin arrived today.  I didn't get a chance to use it today as I had to charge it before I use it for the first time.  But I can't wait to try it out.  I hope it works as well as everyone says.

Ohh, one more thing.....check out this video.  Runners are a special breed.  HT to Joe.

8 + 3 = 11

So our family did 11 miles today.  I ran 3 and Steph ran 8.  Woohoo for her!!!  This is the longest she's ever run and she seemed to enjoy it.  This was also her first time out with the FuelBelt and I think she's getting the hang of it.  She hopefully will run the VA Beach Shamrock Half with me in March.

Today was my first time running since the marathon.  Things went well, but I'm definitely still recovering.  I was a bit sluggish and I have a little soreness in my right calf.  I  bought The Stick at the race last week and I love it.  It really helps to work out some of knots and soreness, so I think I'll have a session with it this evening.

I'll take a rest day tomorrow and then 3 again on Monday I think.  I want to get back to 5-8-5-12 as my normal running routine.  That way I can stay in shape for the halfs that are coming and then prepare for the full marathon in October.

I've come to the conclusion that I think I only want to run halfs and fulls.  I'm not really that fast and I like the peacefulness of the longer runs.  That doesn't mean that I won't run some shorter races, but I think the majority of my races will be longer ones.

I rewarded myself this week by purchasing the Garmin Foreunner 205.  I can't wait to try it out.  I have a feeling it won't work so well through the tunnel we have on our trail, but everyone seems to highly recommend it.

Ohhh, one more thing.  I left the ipod at home today.  This was the first time I didn't run with it.  I'm slowly weaning myself off of it as most of the races I'm running don't allow them.

Next Steps (pun intended)

So I did a little research on some marathon stats.  In 2005, 382,000 people completed a marathon in the United States (according to marathonguide.com).  In 2005, the population of the US was around 297 million.  That means that .13% of the US population completed a marathon in 2005....that's 1/10 of 1%.  Wow...I feel like I'm in some really unique club now :)

Anyway, I decided to register for a few half-marathons in 2008.  You can see them over on the right there.  I think I'm also going to give the Marine Corps Marathon a try (if I can get in).  I would run the Richmond one again, but I'd like to try another course if possible.  I am also toying with idea of a triathlon.  I'm just toying now, so I may not do it.  We'll see.

Today, I went out a walked  3 miles to get back in the swing of things.  I think I may give running a try on Friday.  We'll see how it goes.

Cheers!!

2007 Richmond Marathon Race Report

Alright, so here's the race report finally :)

Wow...what a great experience. I have to say though that I don't remember many of the details. David seems to have remembered everything, but not me. I can remember certain things very clearly, but for most of the race, it was kind of a blur. I had one of those runs where things just kind of fly by (at least until I got to Mile 20...more on that later).

So things started off early for us. Steph, my father-in-law, and I piled into our cars around 6:15 am and headed out to Richmond. The first thing that struck me once we got to the start line was the amount of people that were at this thing. There were thousands!!! I was also amazed at the different ways folks were dressed. Part of the problem was that the day started out cold, but I think most folks thought it would warm up. It really didn't. It stayed pretty chilly and windy most of the day. So people were dressed in shorts and shirt sleeves and also tights and long sleeves. It was all over. I dressed in long sleeves with a short sleeve shirt over it and shorts. I also had some el-cheapo gloves on and a visor. I was pretty cold starting out, but stayed comfortable for most of the race.

Well, I stretched a little before the race and not too long afterwards, it started. I couldn't really hear the start gun or whatever it was (it may have been a horn). People just started walking, so I blindly followed :) About 6-7 minutes later, I crossed the start line.
Prior to the race, I decided that I would go out and run 8 miles. After the 8, I would stop, get something to eat, drink, stretch, and then go out and run 18. That way, I wouldn't think of it as running 26 miles. So run 8 as a warmup and then run 18. I was attempting to trick myself. Well that worked until I got to the start line. At that start line, I decided I would just run until I stopped. I wouldn't pay attention to the time clocks or the mileage signs. And I didn't. I actually just ran. I ran until they put the mylar blanket on me (or I stopped to eat, drink, stretch, or pee). I ran. That's it. And man, was it awesome!!!

So for the things I remember:

  1. I had to pee very early in the race....like mile 2 I think. I think I also peed around mile 10. I know you're not interested in my urinary habits, but I mention it because, man some folks had #2 problems early on in the race :) I thought I had entered a war zone.
  2. I didn't feel any pain until mile 13 or 14. Up until halfway, I felt really good. No worries. Things just seemed to be very fluid and easy.
  3. Around that same time, someone in front of me decided to release the most awful gas I think I've ever been exposed to. The bad thing was that I think the people behind me thought it was me. So for the record, it wasn't. I passed no gas in the 2007 Richmond Marathon ;)
  4. At mile 16, I ate one of the marathon provided Clif-Shots and almost choked on it. I had brought my own GU, but I thought I would try some of of the Clif-Shots. Big mistake. My plan was to eat every four miles. So I had three GU's prior to mile 16. At 16, I had the Clif-Shot and literally choked as Clif-Shots are sooooo thick. Thankfully, I saw Steph at a stop soon after 16 and swapped out my remaining Clif-Shots for GUs. However, it helps when you remember to continue eating. I actually forgot to eat my last GU (which was planned for mile 24). I was so caught up in my running that I actually forgot to eat.
  5. I saw my family and friends at all of the spectator stops. It was so nice and comforting to see them at each stop. I didn't spend much time with them, but seeing them let me know that I wasn't doing this alone.
  6. At mile 20, my nightmare began. I thought I had hit the wall in some of my training long runs. I hadn't. In fact, I don't even think I knew what the wall was until I hit mile 20 of the marathon. Right after my debacle with the Clif-Shot we crossed the Lee Bridge. Going across this bridge was like crossing the Arctic. I swear the winds were like 25-30 mph, blowing right into our faces. I was actually drafting behind people. Anyway, after we crossed the bridge, we had a couple miles until the last spectator stop. I saw my wife and family and then was off to mile 20 and beyond. I had no idea it would be that hard to get through 20 and 21. The only reason I was able to do it is because there were some folks in front of me who kept running. I simply stared at their legs and continued. I didn't see anything other than their legs for the next two miles. I've never experienced anything like it. If those people hadn't been there, I don't know that I would have kept running. You should know that I thanked them at the next water stop. They had no idea they had helped me, so I thought I would let them know.
  7. At mile 22, something miraculous happened. I suddenly snapped out of my nightmare. It was like I had just started running. Did that happen to you when you broke through the wall? I assumed I was going to stay in that funk until the end of the race, but I didn't. I felt like a new person. I had more energy and was ready to finish.
  8. Around mile 24, a young woman began running alongside me. She was having trouble continuing. I think she was using me like I used those folks earlier. Anyway, shortly after, she began crying and falling back. So I fell back. I asked if everything was ok. Through the sobs, she said she didn't think she would make it. I told her that she would and encouraged her to run with me to the next water stop (which was mile 25). So she did. We ran together to 25. She cried the whole way, but she made it. I don't know what happened to her after 25 as I didn't stop. I hope she made it.
  9. I was running like the wind at this point. I made it through the wall and was really enjoying the last mile or so. I rounded the last corner and there was the finish line. I was focussed entirely on the end. And then out of nowhere, I heard my name. I looked and there was one of my students holding a sign that said "Jason is my hero". Whoah!!!!!! Where the hell did that come from? Could it get any better than that?
  10. Yep. It can. Right after seeing that sign, I heard my wife yell my name. I looked to my right and she was cheering me on. Here come the tears.....I was crying like a baby. I slowed down a little as there were a few people with me. I figured they should have their moment at the finish line, so I slowed down so we wouldn't cross at the same time. Lest you think I'm too unselfish, I also wanted to enjoy my time across the finish line as well :)
  11. I crossed the finish line, heard my name announced by the announcer, grabbed a bottle of water and a blanket, and headed off to pick up my medal.
What a day. I don't think I can explain how I felt. I think that essay I posted earlier sums it up. What I can tell you is that I'm addicted. I want to run another. I know I'm feeling the elation of completing a marathon and all that, but I'm pretty sure I want to run another.

I also want to acknowledge and thank all of the volunteers who helped at the race. I have never seen nor felt such an outpouring of compassion and caring as I did that day from totally anonymous people. There were so many people there to cheer us on. I now know why the Richmond Marathon is known as the World's Friendliest Marathon. It really is.

I'd like to tell my family and friends, and fellow bloggers, how thankful I am for your support and encouragement. There is no way I could have done this without you. Thank you so much.

Lastly, I'd like to thank two very special people. First, my father-in-law. He went out of his way to help me do this marathon. He helped with advice, with mapping out routes, with encouragement, with so many things. Thanks Joe. You don't know how much I appreciate your support.
Even though she didn't step on the course, my wife ran this marathon with me. She has been there every step of the way, from my first training day to holding me in her arms after the marathon was over. She has been there. She has helped on days when I know when she didn't want to. During the marathon, I held her image in front of me. When I felt like quitting, I felt her with me, running with me, telling me to suck it up. She deserves more thanks than I can ever provide her with. So I'll just leave it at that. Thanks Steph. I love you.

Update

First, thanks for all the congrats. It means a whole lot to know that you guys care. I don't have much computer time as I'm still in Virginia and I don't have access to my own computer so I'll probably not be able to get a post up on the race details until I get back home, which will be on Monday. So look for a post on Tuesday or so with my marathon story. Chip time was 4:51:38, clock time was 4:58:34. I'm REALLY happy with that time.

Anyway, until I get my post up, I thought I'd leave the below essay by Dean Karnazes, the ultramarathoner. It summarizes my feelings right about now....

THE MARATHON
The Marathon is not about running, it is about salvation. We spend so much of our lives doubting ourselves, thinking we’re not good enough, not strong enough, not made of the right stuff. The Marathon is an opportunity for redemption. “Opportunity,” because the outcome is uncertain. “Opportunity,” because it is up to you, and only you, to make it happen. There is no luck involved in finishing a marathon, the ingredients required to tackle this formidable challenge are straightforward: commitment, sacrifice, grit, and raw determination. Plain and simple.

So you set about in your training to prepare your body for the rigors of running 26.2 miles. You train like crazy, dedicating yourself wholeheartedly to the challenge ahead, pouring everything you’ve got into it. But you know the Marathon will ask for more. In the dark recesses of you mind, a gloomy voice is saying, you can’t. You do your best to ignore this self-doubt, but the voice doesn’t go away.

The Marathon shakes you to the core. It deconstructs your very essence, stripping away all your protective barriers and exposing your inner soul. At a time when you are most vulnerable, the Marathon shows no pity. The Marathon tells you it will hurt you, that it will leave you demoralized and defeated in a lifeless heap on the roadside. The Marathon tells you that it can’t be done, not by you. “Ha!” it torments you, “In your dreams.”

You fight back, however, and stand courageously at that starting line, nervously awaiting the gun to go off. When it does, you put your head down and charge off into the abyss with the knowledge that you either paid your dues, or skimped along the way. There is no lying to yourself, the Marathon sees right through excuses, shortcuts and self-transgressions.

All goes well for the first half. But slowly, step by step, the pain mounts, while the intensity of the endeavor amplifies. You remain steadfast, knowing that you did not skimp, that you did not take shortcuts along the way, that every footstep was earned through months of diligent preparation. Still, with each wearing thrust forward, that little nagging inclination of self-doubt progressively advances toward the surface of your awareness.

Then, at mile twenty, the voice looms louder than ever. It hurts so bad you want to stop. You must stop. But you don’t stop. This time, you ignore the voice, you tune out the naysayers who tell you you’re not good enough, and you listen only to the passion in your heart. This burning desire tells you to keep moving forward. To continue putting one foot boldly in front of the other, and don’t stop. Courage comes in many forms, today you will have the courage to keep trying, to not give up, no matter how dire things become. And dire they do become. At the 26 mile mark, you can barley see the course any longer, your vision is faltering as you teeter on the edge of consciousness.

And then, suddenly before you, looms the finish line. Tears stream down your face as you cover those final few steps. Now you are finally able to answer back to that nagging, pervasive voice with a resounding: Oh yes I can!

You burst across that finish line and are liberated from the prison of self-doubt and limitations that have forever held you captive. You have learned more about yourself in the past 26.2 miles than you have known in a previous lifetime, now you are freed from the chains that bind. Even if you can’t move for a week, you have never been so free.

As you are being carried away from the finish line, wrapped in a flimsy mylar blanket, barely able to raise your head, you are at peace. That daunting adversary that, as a runner, has haunted you for an entire lifetime is now your liberator, your fondest ally. You have done what few will ever do—you have done what you thought you could never do—and it is the most glorious, unforgettable awakening ever. You are, a Marathoner, and you will wear this distinction not on the lapel of your clothing, but in your heart, for the rest of your life.

Last post until after the race

Well, today was my last running day.  Tomorrow I walk three miles and then Saturday is the marathon.  This week has been pretty low key.  I haven't been as anxious and, in fact, I haven't thought much about the race.

Steph and I leave Friday for Richmond.  Right now, it looks like we'll eat a big pasta dinner with her dad and then stay the night with him.  Then up and early on race day.  We found out today that you can sign up to receive text messages during the race to track my progress in real time.  That is, as I run the race and cross different checkpoints, the timing chips will then send out my time via text message to anyone who signs up.  How cool is that?  That means that folks who are there to cheer me on can actually know when to show up at the different checkpoints.  The Richmond Marathon really is the "Friendliest Marathon".

Anyway, since I won't be posting again until after the marathon, please let me know of any last minute things I need to know.  Keep me in your thoughts on Saturday :)

Cheers!!

Last Long Pre-Marathon Run

Well today was the last of the my long runs (8 miles) before the marathon. I felt great. My legs are defintely stronger than before and I feel like I can go out and run the marathon. Next week is 3-3-3 and then the race. I am soooooo ready for this thing I can't even describe it. Here's to hoping the weather on the big day is cool and overcast!!!

Taper....Taper...

So did anyone see the Marathon Challenge on PBS this week?  What a great show.  I found myself tearing up at the end.  It was really good.  Also, USA Track and Field announced this week that they are banning headphones and portable audio players from all of its sanctioned events.  Now, I know there are folks who read this blog that think that Ipods shouldn't be used during events.  I happen to disagree.  I think that if you want to wear headphones, have at it.  As long as you don't endanger anyone, who cares.  I sent an email to the Richmond Marathon folks and they have confirmed that we can wear Ipods this year.  I'm glad of that.  I like listening to music while I run.

So, I did 5 miles Wednesday and 3 miles today.  Both runs felt good.  My legs are certainly stronger.  I'l do 8 miles Saturday and then 3-3-3 next week.  Then the big day on the 10th.

Wow...3 miles is awesome

So I began my second taper week yesterday and, man, is three miles awesome.  I felt really good running just three after only running 12 on Saturday.  My legs felt like two steel pistons.  I hope that the rest of this week and next week are the same.

It turned a tad cold yesterday.  I ran in about 35 degree weather.  Brrrrr!!!!  Anyway, it went well.  Tomorrow I'll do 5 and then 3 again on Thursday.  I've decided to do just 8 on Saturday.  I'm getting more and more anxious now that the marathon is next week :)

#5590 (12 miles)

My bib number arrived in the mail today.  I'm #5590.  Woot!!!!  I guess that means there are 5589 people in front of me.  Yikes!!!  Anyway, it's pretty easy to remember so all the folks who are coming to the marathon to support me should be able to remember it :)

I decided to follow David's advice and I bumped up this weeks long run to 12 miles.  My program calls for the first taper run to be at 9 miles and I thought (along with David) that this was too low.  So I did 12 today.  I think next week's long run will be 10 or 11.  My program calls for 8.  I have another question for folks as well.  Next week my program calls for my schedule to be 3-5-3-long run.  Do you think the mileage next week is too low?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Today's run went fine.  The weather was little dreary and the wind was ferocious.  Otherwise, it was fine.

Cheers!!!

One more thing

I got my 8 miles in today. It was raining and cold. I dig the rain, but not the cold so much. Anyway, it went well.

I forgot to add the following to my 30 Things list :)

Marathon training is:

10 percent luck, 20 percent skill
15 percent concentrated power of will
5 percent pleasure, 50 percent pain
and 100 percent reason to remember the name

30 things I've learned from training for a marathon

  1. Running is easy (just place one foot in front of the other)
  2. Running is hard (at mile 18, it takes a lifetime to put one foot in front of the other)
  3. GU is your best friend (especially Lemon-Sublime). Vanilla Powergels are also pretty good.
  4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate.
  5. BodyGlide is money well spent.
  6. Ipods are great when they work.
  7. No single person trains for a marathon. There are a whole group of folks who help you get there.
  8. My nose has run much more than I have during the training.
  9. Blog friends are GREAT!!!
  10. Ibubroken is better than candy.
  11. It's hard to write a blog about running and keep it interesting.
  12. Everyone has bad run days.
  13. Everyone has great run days.
  14. Chocolate protein shakes after a long run rock!!
  15. After 1 hour of running, you have nothing left to talk to yourself about.
  16. After 3+ hours of running, you realize that talking to yourself is the least of your worries.
  17. My knees sound like firecrackers when I walk up the stairs.
  18. Physical Therapists are worth their weight in gold.
  19. When people ask me how much I run, I can tell them I have run from one city to another.....twice.
  20. Your mind is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness.
  21. Your shoes are your most important piece of equipment.
  22. Humidity stinks!!
  23. There are scary people on my running trail who sit in their cars and play the ukulele.
  24. My wife is a great runner.
  25. My father-in-law rocks.
  26. Training for a marathon is like eating one of those caramel candy things...it just keeps going and going and going and going....
  27. Pop your blisters early.
  28. I'm more anxious now than I was when I began the training.
  29. In the words of my students, I am running myself stupid.
  30. I love running.

I got 5 miles in yesterday and will do 8 tomorrow.

Another 20 bites the dust....

So today's long run was great!!!! I feel a whole lot better this go around than I did on last week's 20. I took it a little slower and that seems to have helped. I ran from Fairmont to Morgantown again. I like that route as it's so beautiful, especially now with the leaves changing. Steph got in 6 and then she biked 4 as she had to bring me some water while I was running. On the trail we have no water stops and I can only carry enough for 18 miles, so she has to bring me some for the last 2. But, like the trooper she always is, she biked out and gave me some much needed hydration.

So now begins the taper....woohoo!!!! You don't even know how happy I am that the taper is starting. My body is so tired right now. With the taper, I can take a little breather before the big day.

I have a post planned for later this week that I'm drafting now on the things I've learned while training for the marathon. So stay tuned :)

Cheers!!!

I think I'm catching a cold...

Ughhh....I fell like crap. After my run this morning things were fine, but right now my nose is running and I have that weird feeling in my throat which I think means I'm catching a cold. Oh well.

The run went great this morning. No issues. I had to start a little early this morning so it was a little dark. I don't think I've ever mentioned this, but for every run I've done to train for the marathon, I've done in my sunglasses. So that means that when it's dark out, people look at me a little funny (I wear my sunglasses at night, so I can, so I can....). I don't know why I do it. I do know that if I don't wear my sunglasses I feel naked. :)

Stupid Should Hurt (Part Deux)

So I'm a dog owner. Actually, let me qualify that, I am a responsible dog owner. That means that I make sure my dog doesn't annoy, hurt, or scare anyone. In addition, as most responsible dog owners do, I pick up after my dog. Sooooo, the last two days I've run in to a variety of irresponsible dog owners while running. And I have to say it is pretty annoying.

I understand that you know that your dog is a good dog and won't hurt anyone. I get it....I really do. But here's the thing.....I don't know that your dog is a good dog and won't hurt anyone. So, I have to act and react as thought the dog is going to bite me. Why? you may ask. Well, I've learned that if you don't know the dog, treat it as a threat. That way, the dog stays safe and so do I. But, when you let your dog off of his leash and I don't know what it will do, it means that I have to then take precautionary actions, like stopping my run so you can get your dog back on his leash. Normally, this wouldn't cause me too much heartache, but when I'm running now, I am actually training which means I'm timing my runs. And I get really annoyed when I have to stop.

Or how about when the dog, because it is off its leash, runs up next to me and jumps up on me because it thinks that I'm playing. Or how about, once it has jumped up on me, it continues to run after me and follows me and the only way to have it stop is for me to stop, walk back to you, and give your dog back to you because it isn't on its leash.

Having said all this, I'm not blaming the dog(s). I am blaming the stupid people who insist on not having their dogs on a leash.

Stupid should hurt!!!!!

Reflection (20 miles)

One year ago today, my mother passed away from esophageal cancer. Today's run was done in her honor. In less than a month, I will also run a marathon in memory of her. If you haven't already, and would like to, please donate to my marathon run. The link is there on the right a little ways down. Anything helps. If you can't donate, words of wisdom and advice are always welcome.

I finally gave myself a blister today. First one I've had the entire program. Maybe I'll name it after my mom...ha....she'd think that was funny. She would also think that I'm as crazy as a loon for attempting to run a marathon. We all know I'm not crazy....just a little "touched" is all.

Thanks to all who have helped me so far. Just a few more weeks!!!!

PS. We ran 26 miles today as a family, not counting Winnie's 1. That puts us at 56 for the week (not counting Winnie).

29 days and counting

So yesterday marked the 30 day countdown. Wow....30 more days and I'll running a marathon. I'm really excited and can't wait. Actually, I'm getting kind of bored with the training and am really anxious to get the marathon underway. We'll see if I maintain that attitude as the marathon gets closer. I'm also a little nervous. As I've mentioned before, I'm not one to do things halfway. So when I decided to run a race, why not pick the hardest one. Most folks would have probably started off with a 5k...maybe a 10k. Not me, I decided to run a marathon as my first competitive race. Because of that, I'm a little nervous. But, as always, I'll get through :)

I ran 8 miles yesterday and will do 5 today. Then the big one on Saturday. 20 miles. Whew!!! I can't wait.

New Shoes...New Shoes

So I bought some new shoes a while ago and was waiting to begin breaking them in. Today was my first day out with them. As David has mentioned, shoes are a really personal thing. I never realized how attached you become to leather, rubber, and plastic. But it's like a relationship. I couldn't imagine wearing a different pair (I would feel like I'm cheating). And no matter what, they are always beside the door, waiting patiently for me to to take them out. OK, I'm weirding myself out :)

Anyway, you get the idea. It's a really intense thing when you start changing shoes. Now, I didn't change brands or models, I just bought a new pair of the old ones. They were a little tight, but I think they'll work out fine. Once I get a few miles in, they'll feel just like my old ones. I'm actually very happy to have a new pair as the cushioning feels oh so much better. I hope that helps my knees out on the long runs.

I got in 5 this morning and was dragging a little. I think it was the weather. I heard yesterday that someone died running the Chicago Marathon. Here's to Tom at Runner's Lounge completing that awful marathon. Congrats!!!

Wed. is 8, then 5 Thursday and then the big 20 on Saturday.

A busy week, but no slacking (18 miles)

Whew!!!! What a week!!! It was incredibly busy, hence my lack of posts. Nonetheless, I got all my mileage in and just got back from my 18 today. Steph did 7 today as well. Woohoo for her again!!!!!! This is the longest she's ever run. 18 is the longest I've ever run too so woohoo for me :) We did 25 miles today as a family (26 if you count Winnie's). For the week, we've done 53 miles. My run was pretty good. I actually was running much faster than I thought. I did the 18 in 3 hours and 20 minutes. I have to say that I'll be happier when the weather cools down a little more. Last week's weather was perfect for my long run. I pray that next week's weather for my long run will be just like that as I am doing 20 miles for my long run next week. My schedule is 5-8-5-20. I'll also do 20 miles the following week and then I begin my taper.

In terms of updates over the last week, I had a follow-up doctor's appt. to the one I had a couple of weeks ago. I had to have some moles taken off of my back (yeah I know...it's gross). I also had my blood drawn for normal testing. I go back in two week to go over the results. Ohhh, I also will not be going to Germany, so my running will take place in the US that week. I'm disappointed that I'm not going, but at least I'll be at home for my long run. I think that's it. I'll be back to regular posting this week I hop. So, stay tuned :)

A perfect (or as close as you can get) 16 miles..6 for my wife

What a beautiful day to run!!!!!! I got to the trail about 7:30 this morning and it was around 50 degrees. I had to not only wear the long sleeve shirt, but I also had to wear cotton gloves....it was freezing :) Anyway, it turned into one of the best run days I've had yet. I'm not really sore either. On top of all that, Steph ran 6 miles!!!!! That's the farthest she's ever run...woohoo!!!!!!! What a wonderful day for us. Winnie will get in her 1 mile this afternoon when Steph takes her for a walk. So, in total today, we did 23 miles :) For the week, as a family, we have run 50 miles, not including Winnie's 7 doggy miles. That is so cool.

Next week I up my long run to 18 miles. I could have probably done 18 this week I think. Anyway, 18 next week and 20 the following week. My schedule this week will be 5-8-5-18.

Binky, I'll take you up on the water and waving offer the week I do my 20. I'm going to run from Fairmont to Morgantown.

Nice 8 miles

I'm sitting in a cottage at the Aspen Institute Wye Woods on the shore of the Wye River as I right this, so forgive me if I stray a little as the scenery here is phenomenal. For those of you who follow politics, this is the location of the Wye River Peace Accords. This is the 4th or 5th time I've been here and I love to come back. It's so peaceful. I have a two day meting here and then I'm back home in time for the WVU-USF game.

I ran 8 miles today in the cool early morning. It went great. No problems. I'm really looking forward to Saturday. The weather is supposed to only get into the low seventies which means my long run should be pretty nice.

I'll do 5 tomorrow along the coast of the Chesapeake Bay and I can't wait. It'll be so cool :)

Burrr....getting cold

This morning I had to break out the long-sleeve shirt. It was a tad cold. But, nonetheless, I got in 5 miles. Steph ran 3. My knees are feeling fine so things look to be going pretty well.

I go to the Dr. today. We have a Sports Medicine Center at WVU and I made an appointment to meet with a Dr. to make sure everything is ok before the marathon in November. Also, I haven't had a physical in I couldn't tell you how long, so I'm getting one of those too (ahem...turn your head and cough please). Here's to hoping I get a woman doctor.....ok I know that's sexist, but if I'm going to have a physical, I might as well get some enjoyment out of it :) Uhmmm.....ignore that last statement Steph....someone else was typing that.

Anyway, tomorrow is 8 and then 5 on Thursday and 16 again on Saturday.

16 miles for me, 5 for my wife, and 1 for our dog

So I did my 16 miles today. Everything went great. I'm a little sore and I took a teeny, weeny nap after I got back, but other than that it went well. My knees are giving me a little problem, but the leg issue that I had earlier in the week seems to have worked itself out. Steph did 5 miles today as well. And, of course, Winnie got her 1 in. So, as a family, we did 22 miles today. Wooohoo!!!

Next week is same as this week, 5-8-5-16. Actually, as I think about it, the next 3 weeks I will run greater than a half-marathon each weekend. I guess I've run greater than a half-marathon 4 times now, so I'll end up adding three more to that for a grand total of 7 half-marathons or greater before the marathon. Woohoo!!!

Cheers!!!

PS. Thanks to David, I think I'm going to get the Garmin 205. I know, I know...I'm a gadget whore.

Trail Behavior

As I was running my 5 miles today, I noticed the weird behavior that people exhibit while they are walking along the trail. Most folks are quite friendly and will acknowledge you by saying hello or waving. But others are almost anti-social. I should say that I ALWAYS wave to everyone whether they return it or not.

Now, it's pretty rare that someone else is running on the trail at the same time I am. So when I see another runner, I always wave. Some return my wave, other don't. The ones that don't are mostly folks who are really concentrating on running so I usually don't pay too much attention to them. But, the walkers are a completely different story. I've had people not wave, not say hello.....I even had a woman get over in the grass to avoid me. I don't think I look menacing or anything so it kind of weirds me out when people do that sort of stuff.

What is your weirdest trail moment?

8 miles

Did 8 miles this afternoon. Felt pretty good, but my leg is hurting a little. It kind of feels like my soleus issue again, but I hope not. I have run two days in a row, so tomorrow is a rest day. Hopefully that will clear up the problem. Thursday is 5 miles and then I have 16 on Saturday.

I have to say that I've reached a point in the training where I'm getting a little bored. I may try and change up my running routes a little. Maybe that'll liven things up a bit. Any advice?

Steph ran today as well. I don't know how far, but I think she did 4. So the family did 12 total today...woohoo!!!!

Whew...back home

I finally got back home last night around 8:30pm or so. What a trip!!!! After my business meetings and other worrisome crap, I saw Auburn lose to Mississippi State. While the game wasn't that great, I did get to see this "War Eagle" thing that all Auburnites seem to cherish and worship. I have to say, it was pretty cool watching an eagle fly around the stadium prior to the game.

Anyway, before the game I got 10 miles in. So, last week ended up at 5-8-5-10 for a total of 28 miles. I am going for 5-8-5-16 this week. Steph and I ran this evening so I got my first 5 in and she ran 3 miles. Depending on how tomorrow goes, I may do my 8 tomorrow. If not, I'll do them on Wednesday.

Well, I'm back home (and a little tired) and looking forward to upping my long runs.

Good 8 miles

So today was 8 miles. I did it in the afternoon as I had an all day meeting and wasn't able to get it in this morning. It was great. We've had a break from the heat and today's run was done in about 72 degrees with no humidity. It was wonderful.

Tomorrow I do 5 miles and then hop on a flight to Auburn, Alabama. I'll be back home on Sunday. I think I'm going to only do 10 miles on Saturday instead of my scheduled 16. I think I need a break week. So this week I'll get in 28 instead of 34. Next week, I'll be doing 5-8-5-16 again.

The real concern I have as the marathon gets closer is a trip I have scheduled to Cologne Germany the middle of October. I think I'll just be beginning my taper and I don't want to mess too much with my training at that point. I guess I'll worry about that as it gets closer. I guess I can always do my long run in Germany. That'll be pretty cool I think.

Cheers and talk to you guys on Sunday.

A little reflection

A few short weeks ago, I was soooo happy to have run 5 miles on my long run. I had no idea what it felt like to run that far. Moreover, I had no idea if I could continue to up my long runs. I thought that 5 miles was the toughest thing. Well, fast-forward to today and I ran 5 miles as my SHORT run. That's right today marks the first week that all my short runs from now on will be 5 miles. That first 5 mile long run was a killer and I thought (briefly) that I'd never be doing 5 miles for short runs. Well, here I am. What's even more disturbing is that I find myself saying near the end of my long runs that all I have left is five miles. HUH??? All I have left is five miles??? Where did that attitude come from? Who would have thought I'd be praying for just five miles to go. Ha!!!

Here's to kicking 5 miles in the ass!!!

16 miles is long (understatement of the year)

So I did 16 miles today and it was a little rough. I'm still recovering from the mucus attack I suffered from earlier this week (which is why I'm running instead of SCUBA'ing this weekend). And, today's run was much warmer than usual. So, a little after the 15 mile marker, I began to cramp up really bad. I had to walk for about a 1/4 mile to loosen up and then began running again to finish the run.

Man, I am way sore. I never would have thought that going from 14 miles to 16 miles would be such an issue. I have a question, if you guys could give me your thoughts. Should I be stretching during my run? I'm currently not and I've noticed that towards the end of my longer runs I begin to get tight. Last week wasn't that bad, but this week...whew!!! Any advice would be helpful.

To add to the cramping thing, my damn Ipod caused me trouble about 5 miles in. The stupid thing started playing the same group of songs over and over. Every so often, it will start doing this crap. So, in an effort to correct it, I ended up resetting it, which, in turn, reset the timer, so I have no idea of my time for the run. I figure it was around 3 hours, but I'm not exactly sure. Anyone had the above experience with your Ipod? If you have, how do you fix it?

Lastly, it was so warm and I was sweating so much, that I actually had dried salt on my face after the run. I got home and cooled down in anticipation of the WVU-Marshall game. So, as I was sitting around, I noticed this gritty crap on my face....yep it was salt. Don't ask how I know :) Anyway, 16 miles is down the tubes for this week. Next week, my schedule is 5-8-5-16. Ohh and I get to do my second 16 miler at Auburn University. So I'll have a little different scenery.

Steph did her 5 miles and Winnie did her mile. So the family ran 22 miles today!!! And I broke into the 30s for my weekly mileage...woohoo!!!!

So, my nose has decided that it is his turn to run. That's right, allergies have hit me in a major way. I feel like crap!!!!

On Monday, I thought I was coming down with a cold, but I since have determined that it is allergies. I never used to have any problems with allergies. Then, something happened this year and man it's like the flood gates opened. The problem is that the allergies give me a headache as well. The only drug that works is Benadryl.

Nonetheless, I did my 7 mile run this morning. You should have seen the slimy trail I left behind (yeah I know TMI). Anyway, I struggled through it and then promptly popped me some meds. The run was pretty good actually. I felt pretty good through it.

Unless things work themselves out, I may be canceling my SCUBA this weekend. As you know, SCUBA involves pressure and as my sinuses are causing me problems, there is a chance I won't be able to equalize the pressure in my ears when I'm underwater. That mean lots of pain. So, if that's the case, I won't be diving. If I don't dive, I'll definitely shoot for my 16 miles this weekend.

Aghhhhh!!!!!! I hate allergies!!!!

Running and Italian Food

Steph and I went to the 29th Annual WV Italian Heritage Festival yesterday. In case you don't know, she is waaaayyyyy Italian. I would tell you her last name, but even I can't pronounce it right. Needless to say, while we were at the festival we had some Italian delicacies. Primarily, we woofed down a nice big sausage sandwich with peppers, mozzarella, and gravy (that's what Italians call sauce....yeah I don't know.....my wife is crazy). Anyway, after the sausagey goodness, we then waited in line for Frittis. These things are fried dough that are then covered in sugar and they taste wonderful. We grabbed four of them that we brought home.

Once we got home, we decided to order Chinese food. Can you guess what's coming?

Uhmm, yeah so when we went out for our run today, it was rough. I did 4 miles and Steph did about 3. Both of us were dragging, but we got through :)

This week I have planned to be a rest week. I won't do a long run as I have two days of SCUBA this weekend. And we all know what happened to me the last time I had a long run and SCUBA'ed. So, no long run this week. I'll do 4-7-4-7. Then back on schedule for next week. I have built into my training 3 weeks that I can mess with. They kind of serve as buffers for unplanned things. So this is the first of those I'll be using.

Hope everyone has a good week and enjoys the Labor Day holiday!!!

14 miles for me and 5 for my wife!!!!!

So our family ran a total of 19 miles today. Woohoo for us!!!!!!! I should probably add in Winnie's walk too...her legs are only six inches long so she probably walked a mile this morning as well. So let's say we ran 20 :)

Steph ran 5. That's the longest she has ever run in her life. I'm so happy for her. And proud. I ran 14 and it felt great. I finished in 2:43:45 which I'm happy with. My pace seems to slow down the longer the distance. I'm assuming that's natural. Anyway, both of our runs were done in the cool morning breeze which added to the joy of the run. It was great. Ohhh, I almost forgot. Lemon-Sublime GU is awesome!!!!!!

Now we are off to watch WVU demolish Western Michigan. The game starts at 3:30pm, but we have to get some tailgating in, so we're leaving here around noon or so. See you soon!!!

Let's go Mountaineers!!!!!!!

RoadID

A few weeks ago I bought a RoadID. I thought I'd give it a quick plug as it is a pretty good idea especially as one begins to run longer distances. If you don't know, RoadID is nothing more than a bracelet that lists the names and numbers of folks who can be called if you happen to keel over while you're running. I've been wearing mine religiously since I've started the longer distances. I have Steph's number, my dad's, and my father-in law's. It is pretty comfortable, and after you get used to it, you don't even know it is there.

I ran 4 miles today. It felt great. Nothing big to mention other than it was fun. On Saturday, I run 14 miles. Then it is off to the WVU Football game with friends. I can't believe that I'm getting ready to run 14 miles. I think if I successfully finish, I'll feel like I can really finish the marathon.

Here's to my half-marathon + .9 !!!

Running is so fun!!!!

I left this morning for my run hoping it would be a good one. Monday's was so-so. As such, I was praying that today's would be good. Like Tony the Tiger says, it was GREAT!!!! I did 6 miles today in the nice, cool early morning fog. And, even more exciting, was that I lost myself in the run. I love it when that happens.

My marathon training book talks about this thing called "flow". They claim that athletes can get into this vibe where everything seems to go right with their exercise. They call it flow. I think I've had that a few times and I really like it. It is like I'm not even exercising. I think I had that again this morning.

One of the things I haven't mentioned in a while is Steph's running odyssey. She has been diligently working her way up to running most days of the week. I can't tell you how happy I am about that. She runs close to three miles a day most days of the week. On top of that, she also walks the dog every day. I'm not one for walking our dog as she sniffs at everything and I don't have much patience with her when it comes to that. She also poops at the most inopportune times when she is with me. So, Steph is the good parent.

Anyway, here's to Steph's running!!!

Back in the saddle again....

Man, what a busy weekend. So you know about my debacle on Saturday. That had to be the worst I've felt in a while. Nonetheless, I think I'm finally all the way recovered. I did 4 miles today and it felt pretty good.

More importantly, I am a Certified Open Water Diver. WOOHOO!!!!!! That means that I can dive up to 60 feet anywhere in the world. We did all of our final dives at the Youghiogheny River Dam and man it was so cool. On Saturday, we did some surface skills and underwater skills similar to what we had done in the pool. Then we had a underwater tour of the lake. We didn't get much deeper than about 25 feet or so. However, I did recover an artifact from the bottom of the lake. It's of the modern period, apparently used by homo sapiens.....possibly even homo sapiens infants.

Uhmm.....*ahem*.....it is a little cup kids play with at the beach. Not very exciting, but it was still pretty cool to find something. I was the only one who found something so I took it as a sign that I'm supposed to be diving in wrecks because I can recover things....yeah I know...shut up.

On Sunday, we did some more skills, both surface and underwater, and then we had another trip along the bottom of the lake. This time, however, we went about 45 feet deep. Until you go that far under the water, you really don't know what cold and dark really mean. We had some light but it was still pretty dark and it felt really cold. Nothing spells panic like cold and dark under 45 feet of water. Anyway, it was exhilarating. I really enjoyed it and am even more excited about my additional upcoming SCUBA courses. In two weeks, I'll be taking the Advanced Open Water Diver course where I get to do a deep dive and a night dive. The deep dive goes down to 100 feet. I can't wait. Later in September, I will also be taking the Rescue Diver course. After that, and a few more dives, I'll be a Master Scuba Diver.

I'll also be purchasing my own regulator this month as I really hate using the ones that everyone else uses in the classes.

Because of my marathon training and the fact that SCUBA is slowly taking over my life, I've decided against Fencing. It is just too much I think.

Anyway, here's to a great week running. My schedule is 4-6-4-14.

Worst Training Day Ever (12 miles)

Some of you may not know, but I am, in reality, Batman. So, what does Batman do when he has 5 hours of SCUBA to do on his long run day? Well he moves his long run to the afternoon so he can get his SCUBA in. And, being Batman, he doesn't care that the temperature this afternoon was somewhere around 93 degrees, with a heat index over 100. He also doesn't care that his SCUBA instructor told him that the nitrogen will make him very tired.

Well, Batman learned his limit today. Ugh!!! I got up about 6:00am this morning so I could get to the lake in time for our SCUBA. I'll fill you in tomorrow how SCUBA went as there is way too much to tell you and I'm dead tired right now. I left the lake around 1pm or so. Came home, ate a Subway sub and then tried to get a little nap before heading out to do my run at 5:00pm. I got to the trail and ran the first 6 miles. After that, I had to alternate running and walking. It stunk. This is the first run that I've had so far in the training where I had to walk. With the walking, I ended up finishing the 12 miles in about 2 1/2 hours. I'm pretty happy with that considering how much walking I did.

So what did I learn?

1. Don't SCUBA and do a long run on the same day.
2. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS run in the morning.
3. Batman is human.

Why do I run?

Last week I was planning a post on motivation and simply ran out of time. So I decided to do it this week. Actually, this post is not so much about motivation as it is about what motivates me to run. Rob, over at Running To Lose, posted a couple of weeks ago about this idea of Inner Defiance. And, I have to say, this is a part of what motivates me to keep running, but it doesn't really hit on what gets me out the door. Inner defiance keeps me going once I'm running, but what motivates to run is different. For me, why I run is almost a completely external thing. That is, I run because something outside myself makes me.

So what does that mean? It's a little hard to explain. The reasons I have for running are not because of anything it does for me. Don't get me wrong, I really like the feelings I get from running. I love the physical benefits. But what gets me out the door is something outside of me. I run because I feel like if I don't, I can't take care of those close to me. How did I get that idea? It's a little bit of a story, but here goes.

My father died of cancer (melanoma) when I was two. My mother died of cancer (esophageal) last year. I was 32. My mother's death was a very long and horrible process for her and for our family. For most of my life, she raised me by herself. She put herself through college and worked a full-time job while raising a very obnoxious little boy. I used to wonder why she did it. Why go to school and work at the same time? Why go through all that? Why not just work and be done with it? It seems that so many people just quit when obstacles like that face them. So why did she do it? I used to wonder that, until one day, I got the courage to ask her. She told me that she did it for me. When she said that, it floored me. She did it for me? Huh? If she hadn't told me, I would have said that she did it to better herself. To be a better person. But, she told me the reason she got up at 5am and got home around 8 or 9pm every weekday was so that I could have a better life.

And, because of her, I did. Because she went to school, she was able to get a better paying job which then enabled her to work different hours, which allowed her to spend more time raising me. And, it allowed us to purchase and do things we could not do before. We went on vacations, we had new clothes instead of hand-me-downs, we could eat out every now and then. You get the idea. She did what she did because of me.

Late last year, soon after my mom's death, Steph and I went hiking at Cooper's Rock. Cooper's Rock is a nice area with tons of great trails. We hiked this one particular trail that was a tough one. Very steep, lots of rocks and things to make the hike hazardous. As we were walking, Steph was having difficulty keeping her balance because of the condition of the trail. I was have trouble too. As we were walking, I kept thinking about something bad happening. What if she fell and hurt herself? What if she broke a leg? What if she sprained an ankle? How would we get back? I guess I should say that I was in horrible shape. I weighed 230lbs and hadn't exercised in I couldn't tell you how long. Given that, its not like I could have run back to the trailhead and summoned help. So, I decided right then and there that if I ever expected to be a good husband and save my wife should anything bad ever happen to her, I would need to get in shape. Kind of corny, I know. But, like my mom who worked very hard for me, I began to run because of my wife.

What has happened is that now, I run for more than just my wife. I still run because I want to be able to take care of her, but it seems now that I also run because I can and other people can't. There are so many folks who cannot run because of physical disability. I figure if I have the ability to run while others cannot, then somehow I'm not wasting the gift of running that I have been given. I'm not taking for granted the ability to run. Last month, Steph and I were eating out at a restaurant near her dad's place. As we were eating, I noticed a young man who was leaving with his parents. They were paying the bill at the cash register and I noticed that the boy was blind. He was holding on to his dad's arm as he couldn't see. I felt pity. I know I'm not supposed to feel bad for disabled folks because we are always told that folks who are physically limited don't want our sympathy. I don't know that I believe that and I've never really been politically correct, but either way, I felt sad for him. I felt as though I shouldn't be wasting the abilities that I have.

I guess what I'm getting at is that what gets me on the road each morning is not my inner defiance, but the belief that there is something bigger than me that is served by my running. In my particular case, that bigger thing is my family and the idea that I have the ability to run. For you, it may be something entirely different. But, I think if you look hard enough and deep enough, you'll find that although you run because it feels good and because you are in better physical health, there is something else at work. Something bigger. In the end, it seems that we run for something larger than ourselves. It's almost as if we run for each other.

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.
Love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a given thing,
Seems the more I gave the less I got.
What's the use in tryin'?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Afternoon running stinks!!!

So I had to do my run in the afternoon today. Our fall semester started on Monday and today was the first day I had to teach. Today's first class was at 10am. I started with the intention of getting up extra early and doing my run this morning before class, but man I just couldn't get up. So, I decided to do my 6 miles this afternoon. Big mistake. It was in the mid 80s and humid. If there was one saving grace, it was the rain. It began to rain as I was finishing up so things cooled off a little. Anyway, I felt sluggish, but my time was decent.

Next week, I think I'm going to permanently alter my running schedule from M-T-Th-S to M-W-Th-S as that fits better with my teaching schedule.

Also, I have a confession to make. I'm addicted to Top 40 music. The first step is admitting I have a problem. So there you go. I like Top 40 music. I have to get it out there as Steph just found out about my addiction.

I feel like such a teeny-bopper.

Weird People

Well this morning's run went well except for the weirdo on the rail-trail. For the last couple of runs there's been this guy on the trail who has been there every time I've been there. At first I didn't think much of it, but I run really early in the morning and one time he was sitting in his car playing a ukulele.....that's right a ukulele, in his car. He then got out of his car and started walking on the trail. This morning, I passed him going out on my run. He was coming back from his walk apparently. I say apparently because when I was coming back in, he was walking on the trail again like he was just starting. I should also say he doesn't look like the most stable person. Sooooo, we'll see if he is there again tomorrow. If he is, I may end up calling the cops.

Other than the freak, my run went great. 4 miles...no problem. Who would have thought I'd ever say that. I remember when I thought three miles was going to kill me. Anyway, I have 6 tomorrow morning.

Moving on up to 12 miles

12 miles baby!!!! Woohoo!!! I was supposed to only run 11 miles, but I bumped it to 12. I'm increasing my mileage more than my plan tells me as my training only calls for 18 miles as my longest run and I want to bump it to 20 or 22 before my taper. I'm not sure that 18 is enough. Anyway, the run was great. The weather was spectacular. I love how I zone out during my longer runs. I completely don't realize that I'm running (of course this is easier when the weather is good). I've gotten to the point that the running feels like walking feels like.....I don't know if that makes sense, but when I run at a relaxed pace it is like I'm walking although I'm not anywhere close to walking. I guess I should pick it up if I'm feeling like that, but the run feels sooooo good when it feels like I'm walking. Having said that, I'm still sore at the end, but it is a good sore.

On a funny note, I actually finished my last 1.5 miles with a 5k that apparently had been set up and subsequently started while I was doing my miles. I was running along and all of a sudden all these folks with numbers on their chests started running towards me. They then passed me, turned around at the halfway point and began to lap me...as I got closer to the finish line of their race, there were all these folks cheering me on like I was running the 5k. Ha!!! So when I got to the corral, a woman asked me where my number was and I politely told her that I wasn't in their race :) Then some guy, who was with a bunch of people and thought he would be funny and impress his friends, came up to me and asked if I was little over prepared. I had my 4 bottle fuelbelt on, so he saw that and thought I was running the 5k. He was a real jerk about it. So I told him that I had just done 12 miles and asked how many he had done. He shut up pretty quickly.

SCUBA is over...what next?

My running today went well. We woke up this morning to thunder and lightning as well as horrendous rain. What great running weather!!!!! Although I waited for the lightning to stop, I did run in the rain. I've mentioned before how much I love running in the rain and this was no different. I can't say I like warming up or stretching while it is raining, but the running I definitely do. Anyway, everything went fine. On Saturday, I have 11 miles. Wish me luck!!!

Last night was the last night of SCUBA class. Since we were able to learn the remainder of our skills last night, we don't have another class period. The weekend after next (Aug 25-26), we have our open dives. If all goes well, I'll be certified after those dives.

So the question is, what's next? Well, as you know, I'm going to take the Advanced Open Water Diver course on the weekend of September 8. But, all that takes is one weekend. After that, I have to get some dives under my belt before I can progress to the next level.

So while I'm getting those dives, what will I do to occupy my time? Hmm.....are you ready? FENCING!!!!! Woohooo!!!! That's right, I'll be taking Fencing lessons. How cool will that be? Those classes start on September 5 and go to November 14. Soooooo, as I continue with my SCUBA, I'll be taking Fencing classes as well.

Here's to becoming a swordfighting, SCUBA diving runner :)

Break in the Weather

Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. He knows he must run faster than the slowest gazelle or he will starve. Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. He knows he must run faster than the fastest lion or he will be eaten. It doesn't matter if you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running!
What a beautiful day we had today. My run today was done in 60 degree weather and no humidity. Woohoo!!! It was great. It looks like the weather is going to begin to get cooler after this week (at least according to our idiot weather people). We'll see. I have little confidence in their ability.

I ran 5 miles this morning and I was a little sluggish. I didn't eat anything before the run, which is a big no no. But other than that it went fine.

Tomorrow is SCUBA. We have two more classes and then I'm certified. We have our final tomorrow and then some more swimming. Next week is nothing but swimming. Then, on the weekend, we go for our open-water dives which we do in a nearby lake. I have to figure out how to get my long run in and the open water dives on the same day...hmm....I may move my long run to Sunday.

Podrunner

Today's 4 miles went great. The weather was great and I felt good afterwards. I picked up the pace a little and came in just over 38 minutes. I'm pretty happy with that as I'm really quite scared about pushing myself too hard. The last time I pushed too hard, I did something to my soleus. I'm trying to do everything possible not to injure myself before the marathon. So far things have gone well and I don't want to ruin my streak by pushing too hard.

For the those who listen to music while you run, there is a podcast offered by a guy named DJ Steveboy. His podcast is called Podrunner and it is great. It is basically a podcast of running music that you can get through Itunes. It lasts about an hour and is mostly techno type stuff. He updates it weekly. I listened to it this morning and really enjoyed it.

Here we go 10 miles, here we go!!!

Wow....I think I'm starting to feel like a runnner. I know, I know....I run, so therefore I am a runner. But man, 10 miles (it was actually 11 miles) really makes you feel like a runner :)

Anyway, the run went wonderfully. I think I have become the official spiderweb remover for the trail though. I must have run into every stinking spiderweb out there. Did you know that spiderwebs actually have a taste? Yep, I didn't think so either, but they do.

In terms of the gels I have to say, I'm not really impressed with any of them so far. The best tasting one has been the Clifshot. The gu actually tasted like crap (I got the plain variety). I didn't get to try the Sports Beans yet so I'm hoping they are good. Any advice on flavors? I'd like to try the gu again, so if you have a favorite, let me know. Also, let me know flavors on the others as well.

This week, my schedule is 4-5-4-11. I'm starting to increase my weekly mileage and I can't tell you how happy I am about that. For almost 4 weeks I was running 3 miles twice a week and I was really wanting to run more.

PS. Kudos to Rob at Run to Lose. I think I'm going to follow up on his post about motivation. He's hit the nail on the head and I'd like to expand a little (if he doesn't mind). So look for a post later this week.

Off to Harper's Ferry

Steph and I leave for Harper's Ferry today. Woohoo!! We'll be back on Sunday. Tomorrow, I'm running my 10-miler at the C&O Towpath near where we are staying. I can't wait. I bought some different types of gels to use this time. I'm going to experiement as I didn't like the PowerBar gel I had during last week's run. It was some kind of strawberry/banana concoction and it stunk. Anyway, I picked up a Gu, Clifshot, and Sport Beans. So we'll see how they work.

SCUBA was awesome (as always). We finally got to get in the deep pool. We learned a few new skills like buddy breathing and handling a tired diver on the surface. We also learned how to become neutrally bouyant. That is, we learned how to hover in the middle of the pool without touching the bottom or being above the surface. Then, we were cut loose to swim around. Ohh, I almost forgot. We got a quick lesson in night diving as the power went out as we were swimming. So imagine being underwater in pitch black....it was pretty cool :)

Anyway, I'll see you guys Sunday.

Some brief thoughts on motivation

I have a much longer post planned for what motivates me to run, but I thought I pass along a few hints at what keeps me going while I'm running. The training plan I am following really highlights the idea of visualization and how that helps you run. I'm not talking about the new age crap that you see nowadays regarding The Secret and all that mess (and believe me I have a whole post on that subject as well). This is simply visualizing how you want to perform and then going out and performing that way. If you've ever played any kind of sports, you've done this before. Let's take golf for instance. When I'm up at the tee, I visualize how I want my shot to go. I picture the tee, my swing, the ball, etc. all in my head. Then I picture myself hitting a great shot. Similarly, before I run, I plan and visualize what my perfect run will be. I'm very specific down to what I'm wearing, how much I'm sweating, what my feet sound like when they hit the pavement, what the scenery is like, etc. Then I go out and run that run. While I'm running, if I start to get fatigued, I play back that perfect run in my head.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't work, I do something else that's not visualization at all. It's more like peer pressure.

I picture something that other folks have gone through and survived. And then tell myself that if they can survive whatever it is they went through, then I can certainly run a few miles. I read a book not too long ago called The Warrior Elite. It is about the training process for Navy SEALs. These guys are perfect examples of what it takes to stay motivated. They endure some of the most horrible physical training around and yet they get through it. The run on stress fractures while battling pneumonia. They carry boats over their heads for miles, covered in sand, while walking on broken legs. What keeps them going? (you'll have to wait as that's for my other post on motivation). The point is that they get through it. I figure if those guys can do that stuff, I can run a few miles.

So, I do it.
